Access control systems are physical or electronic systems that are designed to control whoever has access to a network. The point of the physical control system is to limit people from the outside of the door from ever gaining access unless the person from the inside of the door allow it.

There are also electronic versions that typically control network security which limits the users who are allowed to use resources on a computer system. These are extremely popular, because of how convenient it is to have an access system where only the owners of the property can control the system.

So, just to lay it out again, there are two types of access control systems (physical and electronic systems, and more) so let’s go over each type and why they are important in keeping someone safe or not.

Physical Access Control Systems: Are systems where there’s a keypad or some sort key card that can be used to get inside the doors. These are easier to use for residential properties vs. commercial properties.

Electronic Access Control Systems: Are done electronically and can be controlled by someone’s computer, or any other device that is not around at the door. These are normally used in businesses that require more security.

In some cases, physical access control systems combine with electronic ones to ensure that the safety of someone’s property is fully operational and that there is no way that someone can break-in. For example, a door can be unlocked with a swipe card, an RFID keyfob, or through biometric means. Access control systems using card access systems are one the most common types of electronic door control. Hotels use this system of using a card with a magnetic stripe which can be swiped through a reader on the door being used. This type of system is easy for hotels since the cards are used temporarily.

Facilities and laboratories and other facilities requiring high security may also use a card control system, making the cards double as personal identification. That’s why access control systems are so popular, because they give the owner of the property the ability to choose who can get into their property, and the choice of doing this just makes it a lot easier.
